ARC Summer Open - A HOT Week
Well! What a week we had! Probably the hottest ever ARC Summer Open. Temperatures reached a peak on the Tuesday at 29C! Well done to all the players who battled through the heat with the help of ice pops, and the spectators who were all crammed under the hedge! There were 37 different events, 9 days of competition, 225 entrants, over 500 matches played and competitors aged from 6 upwards! Delicious cakes supplied by “The Cake Lady” Cindy, followed by the Pop-Up Bar and Cafe, also helped the week to go with a swing!
The week began with Men’s and Ladies Vets doubles which was fiercely fought by both sexes! Thursday saw 72 children U8, U9 & U10 on site for all the singles events, and we were even able to have separate boy’s and girl’s events in all 3 age groups. The play lasted for 10 hours! These could not have happened without the help of our great team of Junior volunteers who were on court scoring: Heidi, Theo C, Oli W, Amelia, Theo M, Nate, Jess, Iseo, Rufus, Henry. The team were so good we were asked if they travel outside of the Southwest to run events-praise indeed. Also, a huge thank you to Doug who assisted with the refereeing this year.’
Events for older juniors were well supported and the compass draws meant that everyone found their own level in the end. It was great to attract enough girls to hold 2 singles events this year, but sadly no doubles. Children travelled from as far away as Manchester, Wales and Sussex to compete here. 32 children from ARC entered with some excellent results.

The adult tournament did not disappoint with its late-night doubles of a very high standard, but no spectators wrapped in blankets this year, just the 80’s themed party which was such a success and the cakes and drinks going down well. Again, competition was fierce, both from the home club and visitors from away. The Men’s Singles Title this year went to ARC member Emerson Styles who fought off Stan from Truro in a final of high level tennis. The Ladies Singles was won by a 15-year-old from Bath whilst Heidi was RU.
